What Items Could be Attached to Your Roof?

You may have considered attaching different items to your roof like security cameras and antennas. However, if you really do want to have them outdoors, make sure to hire a professional roofing contractor to do the job. It’s for you and your roofing system’s safety.

Discover things that can and can’t be attached to your roof in this post.

Is It Safe to Drive Nails Into Your Roof?

Roofing professionals do use nails to apply shingles but they do it in a very specific way so that every nail is covered by the shingle above it. Adding another nail above the shingles can compromise the roofing system. That nail will puncture the shingles and underlayment of your roof, creating a hole through the system. Water can penetrate that hole when it rains, which can reach the attic. Keep in mind that a leaking roof can cause major issues for your home.

Antenna

Your roofer can attach an antenna to your roof, but we recommend considering other options. The resulting holes from attaching an antenna to the roof can cause leaks. Modern digital signals can pass through your roof without reducing signal quality.

Security Camera

Camera manufacturers don’t recommend attaching your security camera to your roof. While most security cameras today are weatherproof, rain and snow can still reduce their lifespan. Harsh weather can affect their view. It’s best to attach them to the soffit or the underside of your roof’s eave.

Christmas Decor

Some manufacturers have recommendations on how to safely attach Christmas lights and decorations from your roof. However, it should be done carefully to prevent damaging your roof. You can contact your roofer for assistance on hanging unique, heavy, or fragile decora.
