Spring is already here, which means it’s time to give your roof the care and attention it needs. After all, it has been through a lot over the past few months, no thanks to the harsh winter weather. The Great American Roofing Company has put together a list of roof maintenance tips to consider this new season.
1. Clean Your Roof and Gutters. Winter winds blow everything around, including debris, which may have ended up on your roof and in your gutters. This spring, one of the first things you should do is remove dead leaves, pine needles, acorns and other fragments of organic material. Leaving them there not only makes your roof and gutter unsightly but can also lead to clogs.
2. Inspect Your Shingles and Flashings. Perform a partial visual check from the ground if you aren’t comfortable climbing up on your roof. Look for missing or damaged shingles. Check if the flashings are still properly sealed. If there’s something out of the ordinary, get in touch with your local roofing contractor for a thorough assessment. They will tell you if your roof will need to be repaired or replaced entirely depending on the extent of shingle damage.
3. Trim Tree Limbs. Check if the tree branches near your home are close to touching your roof. Don’t let them grow further, otherwise, they may scrape against your roof every time the wind blows, causing the shingles to lose their protective granules. This spring, make sure to trim the branches back a few feet.
4. Examine Your Soffit and Fascia. Soffits are metal or wood panels located under the roof’s overhang, while fascias are horizontal boards that run along the roofline. Both of these elements are necessary for a strong and healthy roofing system. Check for signs of rot, mold and other forms of damage. They may need to be fixed or replaced, depending on the extent and severity of the problem.
